A conceptual tool for assessment design
Helping teachers, educators, curriculum developers, designers
with conceptualising non-exam assessments that enable
the safe use and prevent misuse of generative AI

The advances made by generative AI are putting non-exam assessments at risk in many educational sectors, including tertiary and vocational education. As AI continues to evolve, the security of different types of assessments involving text, images, code, calculations, etc will become increasingly threatened. This can be avoided, however, through AI safe assessment design.

What is AI-Safe?
Valid and reliable
AI-Safe is intended as an aid to thinking about how to make assessments more secure from AI misuse and to retain validity and reliability, whether or not AI is used by learners.
Student-centred
Our conceptual framework is entirely consistent with student-centred learning approaches (which can also help to prevent the misuse of AI in the assessment of learning).
Education and training
Our design tool is primarily aimed at assessment in vocational and professional tertiary education. But it can be applied to other educational sectors and teaching contexts.
AI misuse
Any use of AI by learners which prevents the full and fair assessment of their individual learning is AI misuse. How to safeguard an assessment from this will depend on its design.
Legitimate AI use
AI safe design need not exclude the legitimate use of AI in learning and teaching, including in assessments with criteria that are capable of distinguishing student work from AI work.
Task-driven / problem-based
The safest approach is to have realistic contexts and objectives where learners apply knowledge and skills in ways that will be meaningful to them and to real practitioners in their field.
