How to use AI-Safe

Our design tool can be used to evaluate the security of

  • new assessments
  • redesigned assessments
  • current assessments in need of improvement

The guiding questions in each component of the tool are intended to help with identifying potential weaknesses in an existing assessment and/or possible features that would enhance the security of a new design.

These questions may be answered in sequence in order to establish the following (click to expand):

1. a specific context for learners to work in

The more specific the context, the more authentic the task is likely to be.

2. authentic work for learners to do in this context

Real-world practices determine ways in which learners can collaborate.

3. how collaboration might enable them to do this work

Collaboration patterns influence the shape that the process can take.

4. an observable process for working (partly) in collaboration

The process ensures that (some of) the content used is learner-generated.

5. the type of content to be generated through this process

Each of the steps above helps to define what this content will consist of.

However, since creativity is not linear, the components of our conceptual tool may be used in any order that is useful to designers.

AI-Safe is there to guide and develop the user’s approach to assessment design. It develops awareness of AI safety and vulnerability, whilst encouraging flexible and divergent thinking in the search for solutions to design problems. With every significant addition or improvement to a particular design, the security of your assessment is strengthened.

You will find examples of assessment ideas on the next page.
